How to Achieve the Perfect Shave

The goal: clean shave, calm skin.

Razor burn and ingrown hairs aren't inevitable, they're caused by friction, over-cutting, and poor recovery. The right routine prevents all three.

Here's how to set it up:

Before You Shave: Soften the Hair

Shave after a hot shower or hold a warm, damp towel against your face for 30 seconds. Heat and moisture soften facial hair, making it easier to cut cleanly without tugging. Dry hair resists the blade and forces you to press harder and that's where irritation starts.

During the Shave: Protect the Skin

Your shave cream has two jobs: cushion (keeps the blade from pressing directly into skin) and slip (lets the razor glide without friction).

Use enough product to create a thick, visible layer. Thin coverage = direct blade contact = razor burn. Shave with the grain when possible, use light pressure, and don't go over the same spot more than twice. If you're chasing the closest possible shave, you're inviting ingrown hairs.

After the Shave: Support Recovery

Shaving strips natural oils and temporarily weakens your skin barrier. Aftershave repairs that damage. It's not about the sting (skip anything with high alcohol). Look for ingredients that calm inflammation (allantoin, bisabolol, aloe) and restore hydration (glycerin, oils). Your skin should feel calm and comfortable within a few minutes, not tight or raw.

If you get ingrown hairs:

The fix isn't just aftershave, it's preventing over-cutting in the first place. Use a shave cream with serious cushion (stearic acid, glycerin), don't press the razor into your skin, and keep skin flexible post-shave with a hydrating aftershave.

Start simple.

Pick a shave cream and aftershave that match your main concern (razor burn, irritation, ingrowns). Build from there.
